Gypsum vs. PVC False Ceiling — A Complete Comparison

"Both are popular choices but serve different purposes. We explain the differences in cost, durability, and aesthetics."

False ceilings are the single most transformative element we add to a room. They conceal wiring, create zones, add warmth with cove lighting, and completely change the perceived height and proportion of a space. The material you choose has significant implications for cost, maintenance, and longevity.

Gypsum false ceilings have been the design professional's choice for decades. The material takes paint perfectly, allowing it to blend seamlessly with walls. It can be sculpted into curves, steps, and coffered forms. Repairs are invisible when done well. The limitation: gypsum absorbs moisture. In bathrooms, kitchens, or rooms prone to water leaks from above, a gypsum ceiling is a liability.

PVC panel ceilings are waterproof, termite-proof, and require zero maintenance. They are the right choice for bathrooms, utility rooms, and outdoor-adjacent spaces. Modern PVC comes in a wide range of textures and colours, and the installation is faster and cheaper than gypsum. The trade-off is aesthetic limitation — PVC looks like PVC, and no amount of painting changes that.

Our standard recommendation: use gypsum for all living, dining, and bedroom spaces where you want a polished, painted finish. Use PVC for bathrooms, kitchen ceilings, utility areas, and balcony roofs. In commercial spaces where speed and moisture resistance matter, PVC throughout is often the pragmatic choice.
