Walk into any modular furniture showroom and you will hear both 'MDF' and 'BWP plywood' mentioned within minutes. Sales representatives use them interchangeably or selectively depending on what they are trying to sell you. Understanding the real difference will help you make a decision you will not regret five years down the line.
MDF, or Medium Density Fibreboard, is made by breaking wood residuals into fibres, mixing them with wax and resin binders, and pressing them into uniform panels under high heat. The result is a dense, smooth board with no grain — it takes paint and laminate extremely well. The problem: MDF absorbs moisture and swells irreversibly. In Kerala's climate, an MDF carcass in a kitchen or bathroom is an unreliable choice.
BWP Plywood — Boiling Water Proof plywood — is made from cross-laminated timber veneers bonded with phenol-formaldehyde resin. The cross-ply structure gives it exceptional strength and resistance to warping. The 'boiling water proof' designation means it has been tested to withstand immersion in boiling water for 72 hours without delaminating. This is the right material for kitchen carcasses, bathroom vanities, and any furniture in humid environments.
Our standard specification: use 18mm BWP plywood (minimum Grade 1, ISI-marked) for all carcasses in kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, and ground floors. Use MDF for all door shutters, drawer fronts, and decorative panels throughout the home — the smooth surface takes acrylic, laminate, and lacquer finishes far better than plywood. Never use MDF for carcasses in Kerala.
