How to Choose a TV Unit That Works for Your Living Room

The TV unit anchors the living room — visually, spatially, and functionally. It is typically the largest piece of furniture in the room, and whatever you place on that wall will define the character of the space. Choose it with intention.

Size is the first consideration. The unit should be at least 1.5 times the width of your television. A 65-inch TV (145cm wide) needs a unit of at least 220cm, and ideally 270cm, to look proportionate. A unit that is narrower than the TV looks unstable; one that extends generously on both sides creates a composed, intentional wall.

Floating units versus floor-standing units each have their advocates. Floating units create visual space beneath, making the room feel larger — particularly useful in smaller living rooms. Floor-standing units feel more grounded and provide more closed storage, which is valuable if you have a large cable and equipment setup.

Cable management is the overlooked feature that makes or breaks daily life. Specify a dedicated cable chase behind the TV mounting point, a cut-out at the back of each cabinet section for cable routing, and a central power strip inside the unit. The difference between a neat unit with hidden wires and one with a bundle of cables draped down the wall is dramatic.
