How to Pick a Color Palette for Your Home — A Step-by-Step Guide

"Color is the single most transformative element in interior design. This guide will help you choose with confidence."

Colour is the most emotive and most misused tool in interior design. Walk into any paint shop and the choice is paralyzing — thousands of shades, each looking slightly different on a chip than it will on four walls under your specific light conditions. Here is a framework that will make the decision systematic rather than overwhelming.

Start with the 60-30-10 rule. 60% of the room should be your dominant colour — typically the walls and large furniture pieces. 30% is your secondary colour — upholstery, rugs, curtains. 10% is your accent colour — cushions, artwork, small decorative objects. This ratio has been used by interior designers for decades because it reliably creates visual balance without monotony.

Understand the impact of natural light before you commit. A colour chip in a paint shop is lit by controlled commercial lighting. Your room has a specific orientation, window size, and surrounding landscape. North-facing rooms receive cool, indirect light; south-facing rooms receive warm, direct light. The same paint shade will look significantly different in each. Buy sample pots and paint a 30cm square on your wall — look at it in morning light, afternoon light, and evening artificial light before deciding.

Kerala's light tends to be warm and golden for much of the year. Cooler tones — pale blues, soft greens, and grey-whites — can work beautifully as counterbalance, creating a calm interior against the warm exterior. Warm tones — ochres, terracottas, and off-whites — lean into Kerala's natural palette and feel deeply right. Avoid brilliant white in a room with direct sun — it will appear stark and glaring.
