A 60-cover restaurant in Alappuzha that fuses Kerala's backwater landscape with a contemporary dining aesthetic — warm, tactile, and deeply of its place.
The brief from the restaurateur was to create a space that felt rooted in Kerala without resorting to the clichés of coconut palms and temple motifs. We drew inspiration instead from the textures and colours of the backwater landscape: the ochre of clay soil, the deep green of paddy fields, and the reflective surface of still water.
Terracotta tile floors, plastered Mangalore clay brick walls, and woven cane ceiling panels create an enveloping warmth. Seating is a mix of custom banquettes in olive-green linen, timber-framed chairs, and a high counter along the open kitchen window that seats eight and provides a live cooking view.
The 400 sq.ft. terrace overlooks a canal and was designed with a retractable awning, teak-slat flooring, and rope-wrapped pendant lights. Brand identity is woven throughout — a hand-painted logo mural at the entrance, custom crockery in the brand's rust-orange, and menus printed on handmade banana-fibre paper.
